Today we are going to be taking a look at a powerful ARM SOC that we will be seeing in a lot of single-board computers coming up in 2022. When it comes to the retro gaming community and modern gaming community in general on these smaller SOCs this is exactly what we have been dreaming of. This thing is an absolute powerhouse. It is known as RK3588. A lot of SBCs in 2022 will be for sale with this chip by being priced between $80 and $150.
We are going to get form factors really close to Raspberry Pi and Khadas as well. ETA prime had a chance to test the chip out early by thanking FireFly. They also sent ITX RK3588 board. This is a mini ITX form factor board. They sent the whole kit. Basically, what we have here is a mini ITX PC that is powered by ARM. So this is their development kit. It has all the bells and whistles. This going to be much more expensive than the smaller SOCs being released with RK3588 but this allows the developers to basically go ahead and do whatever they want with this chip. It has everything built-in. Inside there are ATX power interface, dual HDMI out and in, 4G module, 5G module, dual M.2 SSDs, and many more.
In RK3588 we have got 8-core 64-bit 8nm, 4xCortex-A76 @ 2.4GHz, 4xCortex-A55 @1.8 GHz, GPU: Mali-G610 MP4, 6 TOPS NPU 3.0 AI Accelerator, 8GB LPDDR4X – Up to 32GB, 8Kp60 or 4Kp120. We can install Android or Linux anytime.
On Ubuntu, the SBC is really fast, every app looks snappy, and no bugs, no loading screens are seen. When dragging windows around other ARM devices have a lot of issues. This isn’t that at all but needs to be improved. When we open YouTune using the Firefox browser it got kind of a green and purple screen. It is definitely a GPU driver issue.
Video playback is perfectly working. While playing Super Tux Kart there is no issue yet because it is a low-end game. In higher-end games, it will obviously have big issues. After installing Elder Scrolls 3 we have played a little while. The graphics there are a little bit choppy but it is cool running in this CPU so early.
On Android 12 the Rockchip performs perfectly smooth with 4k resolution. Video playback has three drops but it looks decent. In the Real Racing game, the performance is awesome. Graphics, sound, and handling work are so amazing.
