It could be an end of Open Source software and hardware ecosystem once Nvidia completely acquires ARM Ltd. Rumors might be so accurate about Nvidia’s intention to dominate in data center business with ready IPs of ARM technologies as suggested by Dylan Patel from Semianalysis. Remember, Nvidia is Closed Source (Proprietary) chip maker. Linux creator Linus Torvalds has cursed Nvidia right after saying “Nvidia is the single worst company that we worked with” at Aalto Talk. But here is another side of coin, Open Source environment comprises almost every smartphone software including Android, Google’s entire ecosystem and Linux OS, therefore ARM’s cheapest IP licensing is helping to grow Open Source standards in latest computing world.
Knowing ARM getting under Nvidia’s influence would be horrendous experience. There will be high chances of Nvidia getting high margins for ARM licensing contracts to Tesla, Mediatek, Qualcomm and Broadcom. Thus, prices for smartphone, TV box and autonomous driving devices would be going up consistently over time. Since many people acknowledged anti-consumer behavior of Nvidia after seeing horribly overpriced Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Graphics Card because AMD were not able to compete in High End GPU market and Nvidia is pumping more money into chest to be monopoly. Interestingly, latest leaked price of RTX 3090 flagship is reaching $2000. Obviously, Nvidia’s Tegra X1 chips had not been successful product in Android market in last decade due to Tegra chips remained as Closed Source via Nvidia drivers bringing conflicting interests into Open Source standards. Nvidia may repeat this again after taking over ARM. Luckily, Tegra X1 chips got contract to power Nintendo Switch consoles in mid 2010s.
Open Source is in big jeopardy once ARM designed chips will be integrated with proprietary Nvidia architecture running via Closed Source instructions successfully forcing many vendors to charge hefty prices for every segments in smart technology market. For instance, ASUS ROG gaming smartphone could cost more than ultra gaming PC or Tesla autopilot feature might not be affordable anymore. Common sense prevails above anything else. US Government should block Nvidia from acquiring ARM holdings in the grounds of future conflicting interests including overcharging prices to general public for affordable processing chips.
